Q: Does EnterNet support 68K Macs?
A: Yes.
Q: How do I troubleshoot EnterNet connection problems on the Mac? and
How do I take a trace with EnterNet RA?
A: Using EnterNet Classic:
Using EnterNet RA:
Use the menu File -> Save as... to save to a text file on your desktop.Send this file in to your Internet Service Provider for help in analyzing connection problems. Use the EnterNet Incident Report form to mail to your Service Provider for a full description of the problem. We recommend pasting the log text into the email - do not send Mac file attachments, your ISP will not be able to open them.
Q: Mac Configuration Suggestions or
Q: EnterNet is not currently selected
A: After installing EnterNet, you may see one or two configurations, depending on your operating system or your service provider's preference. To view your configuration, start the EnterNet settings application and click File -> Configurations.
For EnterNet Classic configurations, the TCP/IP panel needs to be configured this way:
1.0.0.0
1.0.0.0
For EnterNet RA configurations, the EnterNet Settings configuration, the TCP/IP and Modem Control panel will be configured automatically when you click Connect. To review the configuration, they should have the following characteristics:
Note: On EnterNet RA configurations, EnterNet will create the Configurations in Locked mode to prevent accidental changes. If the user wishes to change the Configuration they can do so by clicking the Edit Menu -> User Mode and changing from Advanced to Administration mode.
Q: Does EnterNet for Mac support the AOL mdev?
A: EnterNet does not work over the AOL mdev. EnterNet coexists with AOL, so there is no need to remove it.
Q: I can connect but my browser fails upon name lookup
A: See above about setting the Name Server addresses to 1.0.0.0. If these placeholder values are not specified, the new negotiated addresses won't be updated. Read this if you're using older PowerPCs (6100, 7100) with EnterNet RA.
Error: System asleep at time of receiving this log message
A: This error is because EnterNet doesn't support sleep mode on the Mac. It can cause a system freeze. A workaround is to set the "System Sleep whenever it's inactive" setting to "Never" in the Energy Settings control panel.
Q: Does EnterNet for Macintosh support Auto-connect and Auto-Reconnect?
A: These features are supported using the EnterNet Remote Access (RA) mode.
Q: What changes are in the current version?
A: EnterNet Macintosh Release Notes
Q: Does EnterNet work with IPNetrouter?
A: IPNetRouter version 1.5c8 will work with EnterNet 1.09b. Check the information at the IPNetRouter site if you run into difficulties.
Q: EnterNet fails after installing or updating the Mac Open Transport or Mac OS (or)
A: EnterNet Classic must be reinstalled whenever the Mac OS is reinstalled or updated, including Apple Software Update when Open Transport is updated. This also holds true when you upgrade the Mac Open Transport library . If you continue to experience problems after re-installing, go to the System: Preferences Folder and delete the entire Network Telesystems folder. This will clean up any garbage left over from previous installs. Then restart the EnterNet application.
EnterNet RA uses the Apple Remote Access and does not need to be re-installed after upgrading the Open Transport.
Q: Does EnterNet support Mac OS 9.2 or OS X? Which versions of Mac OS are supported?
A: EnterNet will not support the new Mac OS X release. Apple has changed the networking interface significantly and this would require substantial changes to EnterNet. We have no plans to support OS X. Mac OS X includes native PPPoE support, so you should read the OS X documentation on how to use this.
EnterNet supports all current versions of Mac OS starting with 7.6 to the new 9.2.x releases. Most problems that are reported are due to users not re-installing EnterNet after the OS has been upgraded or deleting the System Folder \Preferences \ Network TeleSystems folder.
There have been reports that EnterNet doesn't work on OS 8.1 and occasionally 8.5. Most of them were fixed by upgrading to a later version of Open Transport. You can get an upgrades to either the Open Transport or the OS from Apple.
Error: EnterNet Extension isn't loaded; the Control Strip is displayed as inactive
In some cases this has occured because of the Automatic Update feature in OS 9.x. We recommend you do not enable this feature! In other cases it appears that our installer has been prevented from updating the Open Transport Internet library. Usually the problem can be cleared up by saving the following files from your System Folder -> Extensions directory, moving them to a saved folder outside of the extensions (do not rename them), unstuffing (using Stuffit 5.x) the appropriate file into your Extension folder, and rebooting.
EnterNet (and other
customized variants of EnterNet):
Mac OS 8.6 and below: Open Tpt Internet Library
Mac OS 9.0 and above: Open Transport ASLM Modules
Access Manager:
Mac OS 8.6 and below: Open Tpt Internet Library
Mac OS 9.0 and above: Open Transport ASLM Modules
Q: EnterNet freezes on first page during Install.
A: If your Mac is set to low resolution (640 x 480), the initial splash screen is too large to display the OK button to continue. Hit Enter and the install will continue.
Q: EnterNet freezes after connection is established on early versions of iMac
A: There are two possibilities:
Q: PPPoE Server not responding
A: The obvious cause of this problem is either the equipment/ cable / network connection is not functioning correctly. In rare cases however it was also found to be due to re-installations of different versions of EnterNet which found conflicting Preferences files. To remove this possibility, uninstall EnterNet, and delete the NTS folder in the System -> Preferences folder. Then re-install EnterNet.
Q: Why do I need to have my (local) AppleTalk set to use the local Ethernet port just to connect?
A: This is a limitation of the Mac OS AppleTalk driver. The AppleTalk will conflict with the EnterNet Classic device driver unless it's pointing to the local Ethernet port. It is only a problem for users with 2 Ethernet cards, one for shared printer access and the other for the internet connection.
Q: Can I run EnterNet with TunnelBuilder for VPN?
A: EnterNet does not support VPN currently, and TunnelBuilder does not support PPP over Ethernet (which EnterNet provides). If you install one product it will remove the Ethernet drivers from the other product to ensure stability. You will be able to use TunnelBuilder over dialup still, but not over Ethernet. There are no plans currently to support VPN over PPPoE with EnterNet.
Q: EnterNet / Access Manager hangs when posting large forms or using Lotus Notes
A: This problem was fixed in the 1.09b version of EnterNet and Access Manager.
Q: Does EnterNet coexist with Ivasion's MacPoet or WinPoet?
A: No. Uninstall the Ivasion software before installing EnterNet. The WinPoet or MacPoet drivers interfere with the Enternet software's ability to receive packets.
Q: Does EnterNet support Apple's AirPort Wireless devices?
A: Some users have been able to get airPort to work by using the EnterNet Settings application, and changing the "Connect via" from the builtin Ethernet device, to point to the airPort device. If you need further help with airPort, contact Apple for support.
Error: EnterNet isn't configured to automatically make a connection.
A: This is a warning that occurs when the connection is disrupted and a network application or browser is still attempting to download data. We are looking into removing this warning in a future release. EnterNet does not currently support automatic connections.
Q: Does EnterNet support Firewire?
A: Some Firewire
devices have been known to conflict with EnterNet. Disable the Firewire extensions
from the Extension Manager and re-install EnterNet as a workaround.
Error: Authentication failure using long usernames or passwords
A: EnterNet 1.09 supports a maximum of 31 characters in the username and password field. If there is a Network Name field also, as is the case with Sympatico's network, this is included in the username field and the total must be less than 31 characters, including the "@" separator.
EnterNet 1.11 increases the
length of these fields to 127 characters.
Q: Is Appletalk required to be activated when using EnterNet?
A: This has been reported by some users. Normally, Enternet does not require Appletalk and in most cases you should deactivate Appletalk when using EnterNet.
The problem arises when you have an internal network (even just a networked printer) and a remote DSL connection on the same ethernet controller. The Appletalk device affects all networking for a single controller. It would be better to have 2 controllers, one for your internal network and a second for the DSL. If you have only one ethernet controller, you may need to switch the Appletalk interface from the printer connection to print, or to the Ethernet controller for the DSL connection. must be switched in order to print documents on a network printer. This should not cause problems with the DSL network, since Appletalk will normally be dropped by the connecting router.
Error: EnterNet freezes upon disconnect
A: This has been reported by some users. A few have said that it sometimes takes up to 30 minutes to reconnect when this happens. We believe this is an error that occurs when the server does not disconnect cleanly, or the user stops the machine without disconnecting first. When it still fails to reconnect after the reboot, we believe that the server still thinks you're connected and should be able to determine that it's a new connection and delete the prior one. In this case you should contact your ISP for help.
Q: What's the difference between EnterNet Classic and EnterNet RA?
A: EnterNet version 1.2 introduced two interfaces for connecting on the Mac OS. Version 1.21 added even more features and fixed a bug that required a reboot after coming out of sleep mode. We recommend that all users of version 1.2 RA upgrade to version 1.21 or later, or else turn off sleep mode support on their Mac.
The Installer installs RA by default on all Mac OS versions 8.6 and above. By selecting the Custom Installer option, you can install both interfaces. Earlier versions of Mac OS will get the EnterNet Classic only (earlier versions of Mac Open Transport were not reliable for EnterNet RA). EnterNet RA will be installed but will not load until the OS is upgraded.
Starting with version 1.21, EnterNet will install both Classic and RA modes by default. Your ISP will determine which configuration will be active after installation, but the user can change between Classic and RA as desired.
EnterNet will not support Mac OS X using either interface.
EnterNet RA is strategic for mac users moving to later releases. We recommend using EnterNet RA for most users, unless your ISP suggests otherwise. The following is a break down of the different features between the two models of EnterNet:
|
EnterNet Classic
|
EnterNet RA
|
| Requires setting TCP control panel to point to EnterNet Classic and DNS dummy addresses | Automatically sets the TCP, modem, and Configuration control panels to point to EnterNet RA |
| Supports Mac OS versions 7.6 to 9.2 | Supports Mac OS versions 8.6 to 9.2 |
| Does not support sleep mode during connection - waking requires reboot | WIll disconnect before entering sleep mode, will not require reboot on awake. |
| Does not support auto-connect from browser | Supports auto-connect from browser |
| Requires re-install after upgrading Open Transport | Does not require re-install after upgrading OS |
| Does not support dynamic service selection | Supports dynamic service selection |
| Includes internal Efficient PPP negotiation | Uses Mac RA PPP negotiation |
| Faster performance, less overhead |
Q: Why does RA use Apple Remote Access?
A: Apple Remote Access includes the Point to Point Protocol (PPP) for dialup modems to access the internet. EnterNet extends the PPP protocol with our own PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) extension.
Q: Why does RA change my RA configurations?
A: EnterNet RA does not change your current configuration - it adds new configurations for the TCP/IP, Modem, and Remote Access control panels, and then activates them as the current configuration. These are defined as EnterNet Default. You can always change them back by selecting the desired control panel, hitting Command -K (or Apple-K for Configuration) and choosing your previous configuration.
Most users will not need to go back to previous configurations. If this is desired, use the Location Manager to set up common configurations that will allow you to switch back and forth quickly.
The EnterNet Default configurations are normally set in locked position, to prevent accidental changes. We recommend you not change the defaults; duplicate them instead to a new Configuration profile. Then modify the new profile by clicking the Edit Menu -> User Mode, and changing to Administration mode. You'll notice a locked icon by each field. Clicking the lock icon will toggle the field to unlocked mode, allowing any changes you wish to make.
Q: How is Sleep mode supported by EnterNet RA?
A: When the system goes into Sleep mode, EnterNet will first attempt to disconnect the connection. The PPPoE connection must be disconnected before the OS goes to sleep, because the networking hardware is deactivated during sleep mode.
This was a major limitation with EnterNet Classic. Sleep mode was not supported, and the system could require a reboot if it went to sleep while connected. This has been resolved with the new EnterNet RA.
Earlier versions of iMac hardware (bondi iMac, rev A) have some problems when Remote Access is put to sleep; the system is slow to respond to most actions after it awakens (this problem exists with modem connections as well as EnterNet RA). We recommend that the users of these machines either disconnect before entering sleep mode, or turn off sleep mode. You may also try upgrading the system firmware.
EnterNet RA version 1.2 did not always recover correctly from sleep mode. If you're experiencing problems, download the new 1.2.1 version.
A feature of an EnterNet RA connection is that it will automatically reestablish itself whenever the Mac tries to access the Internet. For example: Awaken the Mac. Open a web browser or email client to begin using the Internet. EnterNet will immediately open the PPPoE connection. EnterNet does not exactly reestablish the connection when it wakes up, but it will reestablish the connection as soon as an application tries to access the Internet.
Q: Why does it sometimes take longer to connect with RA?
A: On initial connections after restarting the OS, EnterNet will search through the list of configurations to select the necessary combination of Remote Access, Modem and TCP/IP configurations to make the connection. If there are many EnterNet configurations, this can take longer. You may want to remove any older configurations that are no longer used. The information is cached for subsequent connections, which will make for quicker connections later on.
Once connected, EnterNet RA has generally proven between 10 to 20% faster performance than EnterNet Classic. Performance can vary across networks.
Q: What is the new Services button offered with RA used for?
A: A relatively new feature with some ISPs is the support of advertised services. EnterNet RA allows the user to select an advertised service on the ISP's network. The default for EnterNet RA is to accept the first service that answers the initial broadcast.
Each advertised service will normally have it's own user authentication database. Therefore if you get an authentication error, be sure you've selected a service that you've subscribed for. Your ISP will normally give you details on how to request a specific service using EnterNet RA.
EnterNet Classic does not support advertised service selection. If multiple services are available, EnterNet Classic will accept the first service offered.
Q: Older versions of EnterNet can cause a system crash with newer Macintosh hardware.
A: When versions of EnterNet below 1.21 were installed on newer iBook and macintosh systems made after May 1, 2001, they could cause a crash at system startup. Changes in the system loading sequence of the Mac hardware required modifications to EnterNet. This was done in EnterNet version 1.21.
If you should experience a system crash, you will need to reboot your system and hold down the Shift key until you see the display "Extensions Disabled". Once the system is finished loading, run the Install EnterNet program and select the Uninstall option to remove EnterNet. Then request the latest version of EnterNet either from your ISP or from our website.
Q: EnterNet RA Connects but is unable to browse on NuBus Power PCs (older 7100, 6100 platforms)
A: This problem was related only to the older mac hardware with EnterNet RA. It was fixed in the 1.2.5 release. The workaround is to use the Custom installer to install EnterNet Classic.
Q: Streaming Media applications intermittently hang or slow down using EnterNet Classic
A: There have been reports of slow transfers or hangs using streaming media applications (such as QuickTime or Windows Media Player for Mac) over EnterNet Classic. The default transport medium for these applications utilize the UDP protocol, which has no transport-related recovery for lost packets. We recommend if at all possible to use EnterNet RA, which should perform better around this limitation.
Another workaround is to change the Transport settings for these applications to using HTTP or TCP. Check the Edit Menu -> Preferences for the application to change the transport setting.
Q: SNMP Vulnerabilities in EnterNet
A: There are no additional SNMP-related services or agents built into the EnterNet software. Your system will not become vulnerable to SNMP attacks simply by installing EnterNet. Since EnterNet does provide access to the internet, you should take precautions to secure your system from any SNMP-related actions that may be enabled either by your network hardware, internet-sharing programs, or Operating System. Click here for more information on SNMP vulnerabilies.
Error: Clicking Connect on RA finishes without making a connection
A: This has been found to happen on versions 1.24 and below. If this happens, start the Remote Access from the Control panel. Click Modem, and select the EnterNet Default. It should be configured to Connect via ENI Network Access, with the Setup Modem configured as ENI Network Access Module. If not, create a new configuration and point to those values. Save and click Connect from Remote Access to verify.
Q: What are the system requirements necessary to install EnterNet for Mac OS?
A: EnterNet will run on any 68k or PowerPC, including the new iMacs, iBooks, and G3 and G4 systems.
EnterNet RA (available starting with EnterNet version 1.2) has the following restrictions:
For systems below OS 8.5, the EnterNet Installer will install EnterNet Classic, which does not require Apple Remote Access to install. EnterNet Classic can be installed with EnterNet RA on OS 8.5 and above using the Custom option from the installer.
EnterNet supports Mac OS versions 7.6 to 9.2.x. EnterNet does not support Mac OS X.
A: This could be either of the following cases:
Error: Not Connected, No Answer
A: Verify that the modem and ethernet cables are plugged in and the modem lights are working. Also check your DSL signal.
Error: Modem Could Not Detect a Dial Tone
A: User has misconfigured the Remote Access configuration to Connect using a non ENI Network Access. Check the Modem configuration. Also verify that the Number field is set to "ENI" in the Remote Access configuration.
Error: There was no Carrier Signal
A: User has misconfigured an invalid Server or Service from the Services button.
Error: The Server has not provided a Valid IP address
A: The network server has authenticated the PPPoE session but not assigned an IP address.
Q: What is the latest version of EnterNet for Mac OS?
A: The last and final release of EnterNet was version 1.29. As of January 2004, EnterNet has been replaced by Tango Access, which is available from our webstore and several ISPs.
