Q: What is VPI or VCI, PCR?

VPI is the Virtual Path Identifier for your Service Provider's DSL network.

VCI is the Virtual Channel Identifier for your Service Provider's DSL network.

PCR is the Peak Cell Rate is a measurement of the maximum rate that your DSL modem is allowed to transmit data on your network. It is measured in ATM Cells per minute.

Q: What is DSL Status?

A: The modem's view of the DSL connectivity is described in this field. The DSL status is either Connected, Disconnected, or Not Applicable.

return to top of page

Q: Why does DSL Modem Status field display "No DSL Modem Found" after a PPPoE connection is established?

A: This applies only to xio-based modems such as the 5100, 5200, 5340, 5400, and 5500, and will normally only occur in test environments, where the Network servers are on the same subnet as the modem. Tango Support communicates with the modem by assigning a local IP address to it's management port. When the Network Server assigns a new address for the PPPoE connection, it can prevent Tango Support from being able to reach the modem, due to IP address conflicts. The workaround is to release the Ethernet adapter's IP address before making the PPPoE connection.

Q: What are the currently supported DSL Modems?

A: Tango Support accesses the following Efficient Modems:

5360, 5200 and 5400 (5x00 series), 5667, and 4060 USB modems.

Tango Support when installed will by default not display any modems. To enable access to the Modem libraries, click here.

Q: Can I modify VPI/VCI parameter shown in the "DSL Modem" page?

A: Yes. Edit the Efficient.ini file and under the section [DSLModem], add the following line:

EditVpiVci=1

Then restart the TangoManager application and double click on the first entry of the VPI/VCI edit field.

Note: Changing these fields to an incorrect value can prevent connectivity.

Q: When do I use Firmware button?

A: There are two reasons for clicking the Firmware button for the DSL Modem tab:

  1. To determine the current version of DSL modem firmware
  2. To upload a newer version of DSL Firmware to your modem. You will need to have a local copy of the DSL Modem firmware in order to do this, either included with your Tango Manager software from your service provider, or from the Efficient website.

Q: What does the four layer test do?

A: The Four layer test will retrieve the DSL modem's view of your network's connectivity. Your computer’s connection to the Internet is established through a chain of hardware and software components categorized into four layers of the four-layer diagnostic tests:

The tests begin with the layers that are physically closest to your computer, and work progressively toward your ISP’s network, providing you with a pass/fail result for each test. If a test fails on one layer, no tests can be conducted on the next layers.

Q: When I click the System Information tab, the application freezes and comes back after a delay. Why?

A: Some systems do dynamic polling of the USB or PCI ports. This can cause the display to freeze for a short amount of time.

return to top of page

Q: How can I change the IP Addresses on the Internet Monitor tab?

A: The Internet Monitor will list the Gateway, DNS, and optional WINS (or NetBIOS Name Server) addresses that are assigned by the DHCP or PPPoE Server automatically. You cannot change these addresses. Additional Addresses or Host names can be added for testing at the configurable interval.

If these addresses change during the connection, it's because the Servers have changed the addresses that are dynamically assigned at connection time.

Q: Why am I unable to check the Remote Management Enable checkbox?

A: When the Microsoft Windows SNMP service is running, it will prevent the extended SNMP support provided by Tango Support from running. In order to enable Remote Management support in Tango, you will need to go to the Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services and Stop the Windows SNMP Service.

return to top of page

Q: What does the remote Management tab do?

A: The Remote Management tab enables Tango Manager to return device statistics and control information to a management agent, using the SNMP protocol. For more information, see the user's guide.

The Remote Management tab is off by default. In order to display the Remote Management tab, edit the Efficient.ini file:

[Support]
ShowRemoteManagement=1

[Monitor]
EnableSnmpMonitor=1

Note that this will not enable the SNMP Remote Monitoring support of Tango Manager. This will only occur when you click the Enable Checkbox under the Remote Management tab.

Q: Do I need to enable Remote Management all the time?

A: In order to ensure your system's security, you should only click the Remote Management Enable Monitoring checkbox if instructed by your Helpdesk. Be sure to include an agreed-upon password when using this, and disable it as soon as your Helpdesk is finished with their remote monitoring. For more information on SNMP Security issues, see the user's guide.

Q: What is the Secret box under the Remote Management tab?

A: The Secret string is a proprietary extension from Siemens that authenticates the user with an encrypted key based on the secret password string agreed upon between you and your ISP.

return to top of page

Q: What is Read Community? Write Community? Filter IP Address? Filter Mask?

A: The Read Community and Write Community strings are defined and supported by the SNMPv1 protocol and provide authentication within your ISP's network. The Filter IP Address and Address Mask are proprietary extensions of Siemens that are used to limit SNMP access to only those devices that are located within the ISP's network address range.
